You're in love and you're getting married!!!!
Wahooooooo, it's all so exciting!
You want to tell the whole world
then start planning all the glorious pinteresty details, in that order.
That's when you begin pricing things out
annnnd the excitement suddenly starts to dim just a little.
Weddings can be Expensive <--note the capital E!
You may find you have to compromise on a lot of the details you were hoping for.
As a fine art wedding photographer, I come across this a lot.
Potential clients will message me for my rates
and the sticker shock instantly sends them running.
Usually in the direction of the nearest friend or family member with a somewhat decent camera.
I feel bad because I know the images will not be what they were dreaming of,
but at the same time, I TOTALLY get it!
Like many wedding photographers I am not cheap.
Of course, I feel like I am worth the investment.
Not only because you will have these professional images forever,
but because I have devoted years to
improving both my photography and editing skills.
Not to mention all I have invested
in my equipment, insurance, editing software,
advertising, taxes, website and gallery fees, props, blah, blah, blah.
I'm going to STOP right there.
This is the kind of message many professionals find themselves sending out
to potential clients.
They want everyone to understand their value.
Why they're worth it, why you should just hire them anyway
even if you can't afford it.
Most times though, the client DOES think you are worth it.
They can see the dreamy results and they want them,
they're simply on a budget and can't swing it.
So they are forced to send the obligatory "thank you for getting back to me,
I love your work so much, but
I think we're going to go with a family friend instead" message.
A lot of photographers find this frustrating.
We simply can't negotiate on pricing
because of that aforementioned annoyingly long list of expenses.
We know what we have to charge
in order to actually make a decent wage and feed our families.
That being said, think of the flip side.
How frustrating it is for the Bride and Groom!
No one wants subpar pictures from one of the biggest days of their lives.
So what are the options if money is tight?
Well, believe it or not, there are a few...
1.) You could hire a professional for just part of your day.
This option works really well for weddings with brief ceremonies
as you can squeeze quite a lot of content into a short period of time.
Here is an example of a couple who hired me for just one hour
on their special day.

This is just a fraction of the images from their collection.
This is how the breakdown of their day went ::
Venue images :: took 5 minutes
Getting Ready images :: took 5 minutes
Ceremony images :: took 10 minutes
Bridal Party images :: took 10 minutes
Bride and Groom Portraits :: took 15 minutes
Candids and Reception images :: took 15 minutes
One hour of time yielded plenty of images to create a beautiful album
showcasing a lovely overview of their day.
Now, did I get the opportunity to document every fine detail
that I would during a typical wedding?
No. I would have loved to have stayed to get some shots of the couple
through the windows at night.
I literally had a million other ideas for images at this gorgeous venue.
That's not the point though.
The fact is, this couple did in fact appreciate the value of fine art,
they recognized my worth as a professional.
Yet, they were content with just a few memories from their day.
I think that is a great option for many other couples out there too.
2.) Another option I would love to offer
is a regular portrait session sometime in the days or weeks following the wedding.
Where the Bride and Groom can dress back up in their wedding attire
and have a private couple's session to document their love.
Nothing would be rushed like it is on the actual wedding day.
There would be no distractions.
I love the idea of taking our time and capturing the true connection
between the newlyweds.
3.) Your last option, if you just don't want to compromise on a full day's coverage
is simply to make payments.
While I do require a retainer to hold your date and
the rest of the payment is due in full 30 days prior to the wedding,
the average couple hires me (and signs their contract)
about a year in advance of their actual wedding date.
During this span of time
I am more than willing to work with you on a payment plan
so that you are not overwhelmed by lump sums due at the last moment.
I love what I do for a living!
I would be overjoyed to work with you to create some incredible memories.
More than anything though, I want you to be happy.
EVERYONE deserves to be happy on their wedding day.
